Description of this role
This role is responsible for leading end-to-end operations within a high-volume distribution environment. The position focuses on ensuring the efficient receipt, storage, handling, and dispatch of goods, while continuously improving operational processes, systems, and cost performance.
The successful candidate will play a key role in driving operational excellence, maintaining high standards of safety and quality, and developing both people and infrastructure to support business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of supervisors and warehouse colleagues to deliver daily operational targets.
- Plan and allocate resources effectively in line with fluctuating volumes and business demands.
- Maintain strong visibility across the operation, building effective working relationships at all levels.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor operational performance through KPIs, identifying opportunities to improve productivity, accuracy, and cost efficiency.
- Review and optimise warehouse processes, systems, and material handling methods.
- Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives and site development projects.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Promote and maintain a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and internal standards.
- Oversee audits, inspections, and reporting requirements, acting as a key point of contact for external bodies where required.
Facilities & Equipment Management
- Take responsibility for the upkeep and performance of site facilities and equipment, including maintenance planning and budgeting.
- Support the implementation, upgrade, and lifecycle management of material handling equipment and infrastructure.
- Ensure preventive and corrective maintenance programmes are in place and effective.
Financial & Reporting Responsibilities
- Contribute to budget planning and cost control across operations and facilities.
- Produce accurate operational and management reports as required.
- Monitor departmental spend and identify opportunities for efficiency gains.
People Management & Development
- Recruit, coach, and develop team members in line with business objectives and HR policies.
- Conduct performance reviews and support ongoing development plans.
- Foster a positive, accountable, and high-performing team culture.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with internal departments to align operational planning with business needs.
- Build strong relationships with external partners, suppliers, and contractors.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Significant experience in a fast-paced warehouse or distribution environment, including leadership responsibility.
- Proven ability to manage large-scale operations, including infrastructure and material handling systems.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Experience using warehouse management systems and standard business software tools.
Desirable
- Relevant degree or professional qualification.
- Health & safety certification or equivalent experience.
- Exposure to complex, high-volume distribution or similar operational settings.
- Understanding of people management practices and employment frameworks.
